Tomb restoration, cemeteries, Great Yarmouth Minster
Location: Great Yarmouth Minster cemeteries, Nelson Rd., Great Yarmouth, Norfolk
Date: June 2014
Activity / Result
This work was part of an extensive project to revive the 40 acre cemeteries site surrounding Great Yarmouth Minster. As part of the model created by the Great Yarmouth Preservation Trust and congruous with the social enterprise remit of the company, integrated in this project were the objectives to engage local volunteers whilst providing training on traditional building skills and conservation approaches. Much of the current team is comprised of former trainees from this project and the Hopton Church project.
This 2 year project involved efforts to clear, survey and repair a neglected, and in part abandoned, cemetery site. The results included clearance of invasive vegetation and creation of native species meadows, the surveying and recording of over 4000 monuments, the full and comprehensive repair of 105 important monuments, the delivery of 10,000 training hours and the engagement of an army of volunteers.
